US Bombed Iran’s Kharg Island: “Most Powerful Raid in Middle East History,” Says Donald Trump

In a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Middle East,  U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that U.S. forces carried out a massive airstrike on Iran’s strategic oil hub, Kharg Island. According to Trump, the operation targeted military infrastructure on the island and was designed as a strong warning to Iran amid rising tensions in the Persian Gulf.

Trump described the mission as “the most powerful raid in Middle East history” and referred to Kharg Island as Iran’s “crown jewel.” The strike, he said, was carefully planned to destroy military targets while deliberately avoiding the island’s vital oil loading terminals.

Strategic Target in the Persian Gulf

Located approximately 55 kilometers northwest of Bushehr, Kharg Island is one of the most strategically important locations in Iran’s energy infrastructure. Despite its relatively small size—covering around 20–22 square kilometers—the island plays an outsized role in the global oil trade.

The island lies roughly 28 kilometers from the Iranian mainland and has a population of nearly 8,000 people, most of whom are oil industry workers or military personnel stationed to protect the facilities.

Kharg Island is widely regarded as the central hub of Iran’s oil export system, handling around 90 percent of the country’s crude oil exports. Each year, the island processes roughly 950 million barrels of oil, making it one of the most important oil terminals in the world.

Why Kharg Island Matters to Iran

The strategic value of Kharg Island comes largely from its unique geography. Much of Iran’s coastline along the Persian Gulf is shallow and muddy, making it unsuitable for the docking of large oil tankers. Kharg Island, however, is surrounded by naturally deep waters, allowing Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) to dock safely and load massive quantities of oil.
This natural advantage has made Kharg the backbone of Iran’s oil export network for decades. Because of this, any military action involving the island immediately raises concerns about the stability of global energy supplies.

A Message to Tehran

According to Trump’s statement, the airstrikes were meant to send a clear strategic message to Tehran. He framed the attack as a warning to Iran not to interfere with maritime shipping routes in the Persian Gulf, a region that serves as one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
Importantly, Trump emphasized that the operation intentionally avoided damaging the oil loading terminals, suggesting that the objective was not to cripple global energy supply but rather to neutralize military capabilities located on the island.

Global Energy Implications

Kharg Island’s significance extends far beyond Iran. The facility has a major impact on the global energy market, particularly during times of geopolitical tension.
Even amid ongoing conflicts and sanctions, the island reportedly exports between 1.3 and 1.6 million barrels of oil per day. Analysts warn that if exports from Kharg Island were to stop entirely, the consequences could be severe. Oil prices could potentially surge to $150 per barrel, triggering a global energy crisis and sending shockwaves through international markets.
